Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the overall process?
- A therapist or parent refers a child from Eastern North Carolina for an AmTryke® - this can be done through our website or our Facebook page.
- The individual is put on our list to be evaluated and sized by an licensed physical or occupational therapist at an ENC ambucs-sponsored bike evaluation event held throughout the year.
- The family determines how much financial assistance they may need to purchase a tricycle.
- If assistance is needed, the individual is placed on our AmTryke® Wish List.
- The chapter raises funds through donations and charity events to provide funding to fulfill the needs of those on the AmTryke® Wish List.
- At a Bike Giveaway event, we individually fit the child with his or her very own tryke and ensure they receive a proper, custom fit. They are also provided with a free helmet to bring home.

Q: What happens when my child grows out of his/her adapted tryke?
A: When we initially fit the child for their AmTryke, our experienced therapists make a determination based on the fact that the child will have room for growth. The great thing about these therapeutic trykes, is that they are very adaptive and grow with your child; you adjust the components all with the twist of a knob! That's right… no tools! Typically on the AmTryke bikes, you can adjust the seat height, handlebars, pedal distance, etc.
Over time, when your child's AmTryke is no longer fitting appropriately, you may contact us at ENC Ambucs and participate in our AmTryke Recycle Program. We will re-evaluate your child for a new and upgraded AmTryke and recycle his/her previous AmTryke to use for another child in need.
